How to write for the internet 101

Today’s topic is going to be about writing for the internet! As you’re reading this you may think okay but what’s so different writing on the internet than anything else? Well your worry will end right here because I am going to give you little tips and tricks for writing on the internet because yes there is a difference. I may add that writing on the internet could be anything: writing a blog, an article for a website etc.

So let’s get to it!
Know what to write and who to write it for

There you are sitting behind your desk ready to type on your laptop or a piece of paper. But stop! Have you thought what to write about and who it is for? First off when you start you need to have a specific subject and stick to this. Too much unnecessary information will make your text look sloppy and hard to read. Too broad of topics and you will have a hard time attracting and maintaining the interest of your audience. Second of all, know your audience! Write in a way that is relevant for them this is utmost important.
Be organized
The text you’re writing needs to be easy to read. When readers scan your text they want to get an idea of what it is about. Help them! Include headings, subheadings, paragraph breaks, and bullet points that make it easy for readers to follow and digest content.  Organizing your content also makes it easy for reader to find exactly what they are looking for. Finally, you need structure! I can’t stress it enough how important it is. Have a good opening, then write your main information (use paragraphs) and have a good closing!

Adding pictures will help make your blog more attractive but will also help with enhancing your content. Add images or graphs to give your text a little hand. But beware only use content that is relevant to your text and adds to it.

Edit, Edit, Edit
Always check for proper spelling and grammar. Especially if you’re writing for a company or content for a website. Typos make your blog come across as unprofessional and are off-putting for readers. Write your post and then take a few hour- (or days) break from it. Then come back and read it again.

Less is more
What is really important for you to remember is that texts online shouldn’t be a bore. Look at your topic and think about what is the most important to tell my audience and what is unnecessary? Also keep the right information in the right paragraph. When selection a title for the paragraph have fun but provide information. Titles are informative this is their function. Don’t make titles too long and adjust them to your audience.
(For a blog) Don’t forget to post – be consistent!

Nothing is worse than finding a great blog that rarely posts and are inconsistent. Set a goal for yourself and try and post regularly.

Writing with your senses
This one isn’t just for online writing but I wanted to throw it in anyway because this is useful online and offline. Write with your senses. People want to read and get a good feeling of the story. They need to be intrigued. For instance you have following the sentence. He drank some coffee. Writing with your senses will go like this: The smell of the coffee lingering from the wooden kitchen table took him back to the Italian coffee bar the visited everyday last summer in Italy. You see? Much more visual and attractive!

These tips are essential for writing for the internet! You can use them for different goals all to which relate to writing online. Have a critical eye but also don’t forget to have a little fun. Hopefully this will help you along the way!
